In December 2005, just for the Christmas season, PROTEGELES and the Spanish Child Ombudsperson presented the conclusions of their jointly undertaken study, entitled “Videogames, Children and Parents’ Responsibility” a study on parents’ responsibility on the access of their children to adult-rated videogames. This study analyses the kind of videogames that children like playing, their content, time they spend playing, etc. Besides, the study defines the level of knowledge and responsibility of parents when buying videogames for their children.
This study highlighted that children have access to adult-rated videogames which content is really harmful for children and most of them recognise that if their parent knew the content of the videogames they play, they wouldn’t let them play.
Simultaneously and since then, PROTEGELES edits a guide on videogames addressed to parents and called “VIDEOGAMES GUIDE”. This guide lists and makes an analysis of fifty videogames that will be sold during the Christmas campaign. The guide does not only analyse the videogames labels and age rating, it also goes to give a detailed explanation on their content. Furthermore, PROTEGELES’ team of psychologists makes their own remarks on each videogame explaining why it is or is not suitable for a specific age. The Guide also includes a briefing of the most relevant data of the study, ten useful advises on how to choose a videogame, information on the PEGI rating system most widely used by the videogame industry and a detailed explanation on what is new on videogames.
