INSAFE is the European network of national awareness nodes on a safe use of Internet and other ICT managed by the coordination node EUN in which PROTEGELES takes part actively as the Spanish node through the SAENET II Project.
INSAFE receives financing from the European Commission in the frame of its SAFER INTERNET PLUS Programme (http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/activities/sip/index_en.htm). This EC programme includes four main actions concerning Internet: tackling illegal content, thwarting the effects of harmful or undesired content, promoting a safer Internet environment and raising general-public awareness on these issues.
The European INSAFE network and all national awareness nodes are in charge of this last task. One of the aims of the INSAFE European network is to promote activities aiming at raising general public awareness on child protection on online technologies, thus including mobile phones and all broadband contents, online games, peer-to-peer files transfer and all different kinds of online communication (chatrooms, etc.)
INSAFE Project’s raison d’être is to coordinate all national awareness nodes that are working on the SAFER INTERNET Plus Programme into just one network, that is, the INSAFE network.
This network’s main goal is to promote an ethic and positive use of all the online information and ICT, including Internet, of course. One of its main objectives is to promote responsibility sharing amongst national governments, educators, parents, media, the Internet-related industry and other actors working on the protection of citizens’ rights and needs in the use of Internet, specially children and teenagers. There is an even more concrete goal, which is to raise awareness on a safe use of the ICT and promote digital literacy.
The Insafe Project’s tasks also include the definition of the common guidelines for all national nodes, the creation of a multilingual website which supports all the network activity (www.saferinternet.com), thus facilitating the exchange of experiences and knowledge among national nodes, and the promotion of the Safer Internet Day annual event.
INSAFE Project is also in charge of the European Schoolnet (EUN) and one of its most important partners is the UCLAN (Cyberspace Research Unit of the University of Central Lancashire). However, its key partners are the national awareness nodes from all around Europe: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom and Spain.
