Minor’s Portal (Portal Del Menor) First Anniversary
Last May, the Spanish Child Ombudsperson, Mr. ARTURO CANALDA, and PROTEGELES’ President, Mr. GUILLERMO CANOVAS, made a presentation of the results of the first “safe portal” for children in Internet after its first year of functioning: www.portaldelmenor.es
The children’s portal presents many new concepts on the development of webpages for children. It was born as a response to the demands made on this field both by the educational environment (teachers and parents) and by children themselves.
Minor’s portal main feature is SAFETY: the staff working for the portal makes a one-to-one verification of the data that children provide when entering the interactive zone so that it is nearly impossible for adults or unidentified people to register and participate in the interactive zone. Thanks to this verification system, unique in the World Wide Web, the portal offers the highest safety level for those children joining the Minor’s Portal. For instance, this verification system avoids adults and strangers getting in contact with the children through the Minor’s Portal.
Hereafter we reproduce some of the most relevant data about the Minor’s Portal presented last May:
- The Minor’s Portal has registered around 700.000 entries. However, the number of children actually visiting and using the portal is remarkably higher as this figure only registers IP but one of this single entries may actually mean many children as they are connecting from a school or a cybercentre.
- Children visiting the Minor’s Portal have visited 3,764,000 pages within it, which means an average of 6 visited sections per children on each entry.
- During this first year, the portal registered 29.345,000 hits.
- The portal has 2,820 members, that is to say, 2,820 registered children.
- A total of 34,250 messages were posted on the portal’s forum, which means an average of 93 daily messages.
- Children users range of age is from 2 to 17 years old. There are 91 registered children under 5 years of age –they connect together with their parents- 742
children between 6 and 10 years of age, 877 between 11 and 13 and 1,110 between 14 and 17
- 49% of registered children are boys and 51% girls.
