PROTEGELES is a pragmatic organisation not only focused on social awareness and reporting of illegal contents; we also do launch campaigns and elaborate specific education materials for children.
The results of the research “Children’s safety and habits on Internet” realised by PROTEGELES and ACPI and later published by the Spanish Child Ombudsperson revealed the need to inform children in a direct and effective way about the importance of knowing and respecting some basic rules for a safe use of Internet .
Aiming at this target, PROTEGELES, in cooperation with the Spanish telecommunication company, TELEFONICA, has launched an educative and preventive campaign, entitled “Squeeze the Web” (www.exprimelared.com) intended to show children the huge possibilities Internet offers to them as well as some rules and suggestions to use Internet on a satisfactory way, preventing counter-productive effects. Moreover, the campaign is also targeting at Teacher-Parents Associations and Secondary School teachers.
During 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic years, more than 40.000 students, parents and teachers from 150 schools all over Spain have attended the campaign educative conference talks and have been distributed the materials designed for this specific purpose. At the same time, much more students and teachers are following the on-line courses available at the Campaign’s web-page. Along 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 academic years PROTEGELES will go on with this preventive campaign on at least 100 more schools, thus adding up to more than 250 schools.
The results of the research “Children’s safety and habits on the use of mobile phones”, realised by PROTEGELES and published by the Spanish Child Ombudsman, highlighted the need to work on the same way with mobile phones, as a problem of safety for children was arousing.
For this purpose, during the 2006-2007 academic year, PROTEGELES, TELEFÓNICA and the SPANISH INDUSTRY, SCIENCES AND TECCHNOLOGY MINISTRY (Ministerio de Industria, Ciencia y Tecnología), have started a programme of conferences that will focus on the problems that may arise with the use of mobile phones. For this first round, around 130 schools benefited both from the conferences and the educative materials that will be distributed: the CONÉCTATE magazine and a CD.
